On February 1st, 2006, 21 American Indian elders, adults and youth completed a family peer education training on prediabetes conducted by Sheryl Scott (Scott Consulting Partners) and Yvonne Ortiz, Colette Lawrence and Sharon Day (Indigenous Peoples Task Force) in Minneapolis. Family peer educators have been given the knowledge and tools to reach family members at high risk for diabetes. The training draws on indigenous traditional knowledge about healthy eating and active living. Participants named their project Piya wiconi (we’re going to live better again). Family education will continue through the summer of 2006. |
